Built in the 12th century, Tyrol Castle (Schloss Tirol) in Dorf Tirol near Merano is the most important Tyrolean castle and the namesake for the entire region. Inside the castle, you will find Romanesque marble portals, early Gothic wall paintings, a Gothic altar, and the oldest Tyrolean stained glass. Today, it houses the South Tyrolean Museum of History, featuring exhibitions ranging from archaeological finds to contemporary history. In the summer, popular soirées with international music take place in the Knights' Hall.
